New on Disney+ In May 2024

It’s a new month on Disney+ and you know what that means: a new animated Star Wars series! That exclamation point was provided purely for sarcastic purposes, by the way, as we’ve definitely had our fill of this particular franchise. Elsewhere on the streamer, we’re getting the rerelease of a once-controversial Beatles film, a new season of Doctor Who, and a number of hotly anticipated documentaries. Here’s everything coming to Disney+ in May 2024.

New Movies on Disney+

This month, a historic Beatles movie will be made officially available for the first time in many decades. Here’s a closer look.

Let It Be

Release Date: 8 May 2024

Given the release of Peter Jackson’s comprehensive docuseries The Beatles: Get Back, this 1970 British documentary might seem a little anticlimactic. Nevertheless, there’s really no such thing as too much Beatles content. Fully restored and officially available for the first time in decades, it takes us into the studio and behind the scenes for the ill-fated recording of Let It Be. Bear witness to moments of pure artistic genius and a band in crisis, followed by a historic rooftop concert.

New Series on Disney+

Disney+ will deliver a robust slate of new seasons and series this May. Here are your highlights.

Doctor Who

Release Date: 11 May 2024

The 14th season of this long-running sci-fi series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson as his cohort, Ruby Sunday. Loyal viewers know the drill as they follow the eccentric title character across time and space, touching down on all kinds of wild characters and adventures. This season promises to feature the most menacing nemesis yet so don’t miss it!

Shardlake

Release Date: 1 May 2024

Based on a book series of the same name, this four-part whodunnit takes place in Tudor England and centres on lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes). Sent to a remote monastery to investigate a murder with royal implications, Shardlake and his cocky associate Jack Barak uncover corruption and deception at every turn.

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire

Release Date: 4 May 2024

In this animated Star Wars adventure, two warriors of starkly different backgrounds must navigate the Galactic Empire. It makes up part of a broader anthology series and arrives on the heels of Tales of the Jedi. Creator Dave Filoni is the previous showrunner or co-creator of series such as The Clone Wars and Rebels so if you liked those shows then you’ll probably enjoy this one as well.

Monsters at Work: Season 2

Release Date: 5 May 2024

This animated sitcom expands upon the world of Monsters Inc. and even features original voice actors Billy Crystal and John Goodman. In Season 2, Monsters University graduate turned Monsters Inc. employee Tylor Tuskmon receives an enticing job offer from a rival company. Will he remain loyal to his closest peers—including Laugh Floor partner Val—or seek greater opportunities?

New Disney+ Documentaries and Reality

After you’ve caught the official rerelease of Let It Be, Disney+ will throw even more documentary action you’re way this month. Here are the highlights.

Jim Henson Idea Man

Release Date: 31 May 2024

From director Ron Howard comes this sweeping documentary on the life of Jim Henson. Best known as the creator of the Muppets, Henson was a consummate idea man of singular talent and complex personality. Featuring interviews with Henson’s collaborators, archival footage, and never-before-seen material, the film will absolutely immerse you in the imaginative world of its subject.

The Kardashians: Season 5

Release Date: 23 May 2024

If you thought the Kardashians and Jenners were but a flash in the pan when they first dominated your television all those years ago, you thought wrong. The fifth season of their latest reality series will follow Kourtney, Kim, Khloé, Kendall, and Kylie as they continue to navigate fame, family, and everything in between. Don’t act like you won’t watch it.

FX’s Welcome to Wrexham: Season 3

Release Date: 3 May 2024

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds bought the struggling Wrexham Football Club back in 2020 and they’re still making good on the investment. The team was recently promoted back into the English Football League and things are finally looking up. Can the club and its owners rise to the occasion? Tune in to find out.

The Beach Boys

Release Date: 24 May 2024

The Beach Boys combined stellar songwriting with California surf culture to become one of the most popular groups of their era, and that was just the beginning. Meanwhile, serious family drama was going on behind the scenes. This upcoming documentary tells their story by way of interviews, rare archival footage, and more. Fun, fun, fun!

Things to Consider for Disney+

When it comes to Disney+, the streamer has no shortage of amazing series, documentaries and movies to watch, but how does it compare to Netflix and Prime Video? To make things easier, we’ve put together a few key considerations to keep front of mind next time you visit the streaming service.

Is There Anything for Adults on Disney+?

Despite being a largely children-led streaming platform, Disney+ is also home to an extensive catalogue of films and series for adults. In Australia, the streamer has the rights to channels such as Discovery, Hulu and Star, giving you access to a host of true crime documentaries and scripted series such as ‘All That We Destroy’, ‘Pam & Tommy’ and many more.

Are There Any R-Rated Movies on Disney+?

In recent years, Disney+ has added more R-rated titles to attract adult subscribers. At present, the streaming service boasts R-rated films such sa Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan, with the streaming platform likely to increase its portfolio in the coming months.

Is Disney+ Better Than Netflix?

While Netflix has a larger range of new original content, Disney+ is loaded with nostalgic classics and time-honoured favourites, so there is certainly a case to be made that the streaming platform is the top option. If you have kids, Disney+ is the obvious choice, but can also be a boost for adults, due to the streamer’s connections with Hulu and Star.
