They’re the world’s foremost brand in athletic wear. She’s a soccer legend. It’s only natural that the two might join forces. Last week, Matildas forward Sam Kerr was enlisted to officially launch Nike’s stunning new boot in Australia: the Mercurial 360. Available in two models (Mercurial Superfly 360 and Mercurial Vapor 360), the boot builds upon 20 years of innovation while tossing plenty of new tricks and some brilliant aesthetics into the mix. The official launch went down in Rebel Store in the Westfield Miranda and suffice to say, like the soccer star herself, the Mercurial 360 boot is quite clearly a winner.
When crafting the Mercurial 360, Nike designer Jeongwoo Lee focused primarily on achieving the perfect fit. After all, nothing is more important to a soccer player than speed and agility, both of which can be compromised by loose footwear. To realise that perfect fit, Lee expanded upon Nike’s proprietary Flyknit technology, wrapping it around the entire foot. As a result, there are no gaps between the foot and soleplate. “In fact, it eliminates the soleplate altogether,” asserts VP of Nike Football Footwear Max Blau. This allows the sockliner to interlock with an internal chassis that’s individually tuned per size by way of computational programming. In layman’s terms, that means each Mercurial 360 boot is essentially customised to deliver an ideal fit for every foot, no matter what the foot size or shape.
Meanwhile, Nike All Conditions Control and a matte finish on the texturised upper allow the shoe to be plush, breathable, resilient and secure all at the same time. That’s joined by expertly placed studs at the forefoot and heel for supreme traction. According to Lee, the enhanced traction was directly inspired by the steadfast forefeet on cheetahs, who remain agile and balanced at high speeds. Rounding out the Mecurial 360’s bevy of charms is a striking, unmistakable aesthetic. It’s no wonder that Cristiano Ronaldo was immediately receptive to these classic kicks, claiming them to be “the best boots ever!”
