RM Sotheby’s has a Porsche Writing Desk on auction that should go into mass production so that every classroom in every school everywhere can have one for each student. The desk being offered for auction is numbered three of a limited series. It was created by the design firm 3 GJB 17. Made from American walnut, the desk features original Porsche body panels finished in Arctic Silver. A team of craftsmen—designers, wood and metalworkers, and coachbuilders—worked over a period of years, perfecting the technique to create the desk.
The desk comes with two drawers. The Porsche 911 panels are attached with spring-loaded hinges that open up what looks like the boot of the car to reveal a finished writing surface. Sure, having a desk like this in a classroom could be a distraction for students—but who cares? Imagine the creative inspiration that the beautiful and iconic Porsche lines could provide!
Of course, the cost might be prohibitive—the desk is expected to fetch between USD$20,000 and $30,00, a bit out of the budget for your local elementary or high school.
