Mercedes-AMG has only built five standalone products to date, but that’s about to change to six with the introduction of the all-electric Mercedes‑AMG “AMG.EA” (AMG Electric Architecture) sedan and the just announced Mercedes-AMG all-electric high-performance SUV, which will be built entirely in-house.
The brand announced that this new all-electric full-size SUV will be a “groundbreaking off-roader,” dubbed “Born in Affalterbach.” It will be the second vehicle built on the same proprietary AMG.EA electric high-performance platform as the sedan, but with obvious SUV size and proportions. That said, the teaser image from the brand shared above showcases a swoopy, Polestar 3-like design for this SUV.

While not directly competing with the BMW M department’s standalone product, the XM, the electric Mercedes-AMG SUV will likely arrive around the same time as the rumoured McLaren SUV, which until recently was thought to be hybrid, but now reports suggest that it will be electric, too.
We don’t know how many electric motors it will have, how much horsepower it will produce, or what suspension technology it will use. Still, we wouldn’t be surprised to see this new electric AMG debut with the highest horsepower of any electric AMG so far. That means it would have to eclipse the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+, which produces up to 560kW (761PS). It could even dethrone the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance, which produces 600KW (816HP) and 1,420Nm from its hybrid twin-turbo V8.
Currently, the most powerful SUV that the brand makes is the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE SUV, which produces 500kW of power from its 4-cylinder turbocharged engine and electric motor.
It could also incorporate 6-axis suspension technology, which is becoming more common in SUVs and sports cars. Ferrari uses it in its highly successful Purosangue, and Range Rover uses it in its Sport SV. Even Aston Martin has incorporated it into some of its more recent sports cars, so we wouldn’t be surprised to find it on this top-of-the-line AMG.
This electric SUV will join other standalone products from AMG, including the SLS AMG, which debuted in 2010. It was closely followed by two generations of AMG GT two-doors, one generation of AMG GT four-doors, and, more recently, the new SL-Class, which includes a non-AMG Maybach variant for the first time. Most importantly, Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes‑Benz G‑Class & Mercedes‑Maybach divisions, says they’re putting AMG First, and EV Second.
“SUVs have been among our most popular models for many years. With the ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are responding to this trend by offering our customers a truly captivating high-performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform. Our new high-performance architecture follows a clear philosophy: ‘AMG First, EV Second.’ This means that the vehicles not only excel as electric vehicles but also embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance.”
More information about project ‘Born in Affalterbach’ will be revealed in the coming months, so stay tuned!
