‘We Are At War’: ‘Shazam: Fury of the Gods’ Doesn’t Hold Back
While we’re all waiting for James Gunn to unveil his grand plans for the future of DC’s superhero movie franchise, there are a few remnants of the previous guard that still need to hit cinemas before Gunn can completely close the door on the incoherent mess that was the Zack Snyder era of DC filmmaking. One such project is Shazam: Fury of the Gods – sequel to one of the rare bright spots DC managed to muster in its shambolic attempt to build a cinematic universe – and happily the new trailer suggests this sequel has the potential to be every bit as fun as the 2019 original when it hits cinemas on March 17.

With director David F. Sandberg and most of the original cast returning for this second outing – including Zachary Levi as the title character – the new film definitely appears to take an “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” approach. Stepping in as the bad guys this time around are the Daughters of Atlas, played with relish by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu, who even Shazam has to admit are “very menacing.”
While the trailer’s a little light when it comes to plot details, it’s clear that the bad guys want the good guys’ powers – isn’t that always the way? From there we get the usual smorgasbord of CGI-heavy destruction, which can be a little bland, but at least the presence of Liu’s pet dragon enables Shazam to let his Game of Thrones fandom show – “Hey, Khaleesi!”

As we almost certainly won’t see this incarnation of the Shazam characters return for a third outing, this instalment looks to be on track to give Shazam and his loveable superhero family the kind of feel-good, action-packed sendoff they deserve.
