Dust off the collared shirt and slap on a pair of crisp white socks, golf’s most elite players are about to descend on Adelaide. The second official LIV Golf Australia Tournament is set to take place from 14 to 16 February 2025, offering sports fans a bold new look at the one traditional game. Fifty-four holes spread over three blockbuster days, LIV Golf Adelaide 2025 is threatening to take over the the Australian Grand Prix and Spring Racing Carnival as the nation’s most talked about multi-day sporting event. But what is the renegade tour all about and what can golf fans expect?

According to the official event organisers, more than 100,000 spectators will flock to The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide over the weekend to revel in all the amazement of the event. Reigning champions Ripper GC, led by captain Cameron Smith, will be looking to defend their title against the likes of Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers GC and Sergio García’s Fireball GC. In 2023, Smith holed the vital putt at the second extra hole that clinched victory from the grasp of runners-up Stinger GC.

“I always knew internally that Australia would really embrace LIV with the culture, with the music, with the entertainment, everything that goes on around it,” Smith said. “I always felt like this was the place where it was going to make it big, and how it’s been the last couple of years has been just insane. Last year, I said, ‘I’m biased, this is the best tournament I’ve ever played’. I think this year it’s done it again.”

It’s not all golf-related, either. In 2025, LIV Golf takes a 360-approach, offering fans a one-stop shop for sports entertainment, musical performances and one-of-a-kind fan experiences. Across the weekend, guests can enjoy exclusive DJ sets from Australia’s biggest artists, world-class hospitality activations and a string of personalised touches.

There is also a Pro-Am event on Thursday, 13 February, prior to the official launch of the event. Here, entrants can play all 18 holes at the Grange Golf Club with one of the LIV Golf stars, before enjoying a meal, drink and a premium gift. Paying players can sign up their own team of three or join on their own and be paired up.

Where is LIV Golf Adelaide 2025?

In 2025, LIV Golf Adelaide will be held at The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, South Australia. Founded in 1926, the heritage course was first designed by Cargie Rymill, with adaptations to the layout introduced post-World War II. In the late 1960s, the playing areas underwent a major revamp, splitting into two stunning courses—both of which are home to several professional tournaments throughout the year.

Of the two, the East Course is by far the most famous, having played host to one of the nation’s most famous golfing victories. In 1976, a then-fresh-faced 21-year-old Greg Norman sent shockwaves through Australian sporting circles by snatching the West Lakes Classic. Thirty-four years and 31 professional tournament wins later, Norman would be selected to renovate and upgrade the ageing East Course. The current Greg Norman Golf Course Design is remarkably challenging, with firm, fast greens and a multitude of hazards lurking around every corner.

Conversely, the West Course measures 6,840 yards from the back markers and is characterised by its long fairways and difficult tree-lined holes. It starts off with a straightforward par five that opens to a more aggressive front nine before concluding with a difficult four-hole stretch of testing par fours.

What is LIV Golf?

First conceived back in 2019, LIV Golf is a renegade golf tour that offers a fast-paced, fun-filled alternative to the existing PGA Tour. The invitational series pits players against each other in a unique team-based format, with 13 squads of four or more players working together to post the lowest score across each tournament. The name “LIV” is a play on the Roman numerals for 54, a reference to the 54-hole no-cut stroke play format for each tournament.

Importantly, the LIV Golf League employs a starkly different business model from the traditional format, which in turn has led to greater financial rewards for those involved, not simply through tournament wins. While the PGA Tour does not allow appearance fees, LIV golf does, meaning that players competing for the $20-25 million purse are also eligible to nab extra payment, while they also have the ability to score an additional $5 million prize for the team competition for each tournament.

“Our model is 100 per cent built around the golf ecosystem from the ground up,” former LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman told FOX News’ Tucker Carlson in 2022. “We are not trying to destroy the PGA tour or the European tour. We are they are to work within the ecosystem to show that it’s a big enough space. It’s a multibillion-dollar industry.”

Controversy and PGA Feud

The enhanced financial component is largely due to the influence of the Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. The organisation’s dependence on Saudi money has resulted in intense criticism, with human rights groups arguing the tour is an example of sportswashing—a political strategy of cleansing a nation’s global image through sport.

In 2022, the PGA Tour announced that its members who participate in LIV Golf events could be sanctioned for playing in a conflicting event without the Tour’s permission, threatening fines, suspensions, or bans. The organisation then doubled down in June 2022, when it confirmed that any member who participated in the first LIV Golf tournament would not be eligible to compete in tour events or the Presidents Cup. Just one year later, the PGA Tour backflipped, spectacularly announcing a landmark merger agreement that saw the PGA Tour, European Tour, and LIV Golf Tour form one commercial entity designed to “unify golf”.
