TAG Heuer is setting the example when it comes to loyalty. Even though brand ambassador Ayrton Senna passed away 15 years ago, TAG Heuer is releasing a special edition watch in his honor—the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 02T Senna Special Edition.
Ayrton Senna became the face of TAG Heuer’s #don’tcrackunderpressure campaign in 1991, a fitting ambassador for the brand given Senna’s fame as one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time. The Senna Special Edition is the first time that the company is releasing a watch as a tribute to Senna.
Inside the watch is a complex tourbillon that is actually the only COSC-certified tourbillon-chronograph currently on the market. For a movement, the watch employs a TAG Heuer Caliber Heuer 02 caliber. You can catch a glimpse of the tourbillon through the window at 6 o’clock, where the sub-seconds dial is usually located. At 9 o’clock there is a 12-hour chronograph counter that is decked out with a stylized S. A 30-minute counter takes up the 3 o’clock position. The 02 caliber operates on a balance frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. There are 33 jewels in the movement. The watch has a 65 hour power reserve.
The black PVD coated sandblasted steel case for the Special Edition measures 45mm and sports a black ceramic bezel that has been marked as a tachymeter scale. The sapphire crystal glass has been treated with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. On the back, you can see more of the 02 calibre through the sapphire that has been decorated with a special engraving of Senna in his helmet.
TAG Heuer has priced the Senna Special Edition, which it calls the “ultimate motor racing watch,” at $28,800 AUD. The special edition run will be limited to only 65 pieces, and like its namesake, they’ll be going fast.
